Updated: Jan 21, 2019

We’ve put together a quick response to all the question you have about eyelash extension!

In today's beauty industry the popularity of eyelash extensions has continued to grow and rightfully so. It's easy to understand the joy of waking up to a full & fluffy set of lashes, after all who needs to apply eye make up anymore! However, though these beauties look unbelievable stunning the application process often raises questions and concerns. For your piece of mind the UniLash team has put together a Q&A on eyelash extensions.

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash Extensions is an astonishing new way to add length and thickness to your eyelashes. The eyelash extensions will enhance the curliness, fullness, and density of your natural lashes. The extensions are generally made from several materials including mink and synthetic. The temporary lashes are applied with glue one by one to your natural eyelashes by a technician.

How long do eyelash extensions last?

The original eyelash extension set lasts anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. We do recommend a fill every 2 to 3 weeks after initial full eyelash set so that you can fill the spaces of the lashes that have fallen out naturally, as all lash extensions do. Aftercare instructions as well as the growth cycle of your natural lashes will be vital and play a big role in how long the eyelash extensions will last.

How many eyelashes are applied per eye?

Generally person has about 90-150 eyelashes on the upper lid and 70-80 eyelashes on the bottom lash line. This will always vary simply because eyes come in various shapes and sizes ranging from small to large as well as deep set, wide set, hooded eyes, and a mix of all of the above. The lashes are placed accordingly so generally you would get about 90-120 lashes per eye.

What can affect eyelash extensions?

There are multiple factors that can affect eyelash extensions retention, such as lash cycle, skin type, aftercare, activities, make-up, allergies and other health conditions. Your eyelash growth cycle plays a big role, most people naturally shed up to 5 lashes per day. If you have oily skin you have to be sure to wash it daily because the oil can break down the adhesive and decrease longevity, the same goes with oil based products like make-up remover, eye cream and sunscreen. Aftercare is also vital when caring for your lashes, be sure to use a gently oil free foam cleanser. When working out we recommend you keep a towel with you to avoid the sweat in your eyes. If you apply make-up, make sure to remove it with an oil-free make-up remover. Allergies and health conditions can also affect the retention of your lashes. Even the way you sleep can play a big role for eyelash extensions retention. it's recommended to sleep on your back or wear a special mask to protect eyelash extensions when you sleep on your side. It seems a lot at first, but it comes very naturally once you have your lashes on. Just make sure you follow proper aftercare and your lashes will last!

Will Eyelash Extensions damage my natural lash?

Eyelash Extensions will not damage your natural lash when done correctly by a professional. Eyelash extensions are placed individually and separated properly in order for your natural lashes to grow. Some eyelash extension places will make a common mistake of “stacking” which causes damage to your natural lashes. It is important that this procedure will be done by a professional with extensive training in eyelash extensions. Most importantly do not rub or pull out any eyelash extensions yourself, if for any reason you would like them taken off sooner, go to the eyelash spa and have them gently removed with adhesive remover.

Is the Eyelash Extension glue safe for my eyes?

Eyelash extensions are completely safe and painless. and the glue is safe for the eyes. The adhesive used by eyelash professionals especially designed for the eyelash extensions application and safe for your eyes. When done correctly the glue never comes in contact with the skin but to your natural hair only, therefore, should not cause any reaction or irritation. Unfortunately if the person is allergic to one of the ingredients

Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes?

Eyelash extensions do not damage your natural lashes when done right. Lash extensions are bonded 1 to 1 which will allow the natural lash to continue growing. If you want to take off eyelash extensions make sure to get it done at the salon by professionals.

How long is the process?

The process takes between 1.5 hours to 2 hours depending on the style you choose, that varies from classic to Russian volume sets. The great thing about it is you can get a nap in the process.

What can I do to prepare for this procedure?

The best way to prepare before the procedure is to show up with no eye make-up on. Not only will wearing make-up affect the glue, it will also add time because we will have to remove the makeup from your eyes so that the service is done properly. You may also want to avoid drinking any caffeinated beverages before your treatment as you will be laying down for a couple hours.

Can I wear mascara?

For this we recommend you to use a mascara specifically made for eyelash extensions. It is not suggested that you use regular mascara because most mascaras are oil based and will break down the adhesive a lot quicker. Waterproof mascara is also not recommended because it is difficult to remove and will cause your extensions to clump together.

How do you care for lash extensions?

We recommend brushing your lashes once a day with a mascara wand. You also want to be sure to cleanse your lash line before bed. Clean eyelash extensions twice a week. We always suggest you to use products designed specifically for eyelash extensions. Avoid any oil based products close to your eyes, any steam, sauna. Use lash coating before doing any activities like workout, swimming, hiking, etc. Sleep on your back or use sleep mask designed to protect eyelash extensions.

Why do I need eyelash extensions touch ups?

A big role here plays lash growth cycle. Generally every person experiences eyelash shedding every day simply because new lashes are gradually coming in as 2 to 5 of your natural lashes are shedding. That means that:

In one week - You will lose about 21 lashes

In two weeks - You will lose about 42 lashes

In three weeks - You will lose about 63 lashes

This may vary in number person to person. When you are not wearing extensions, this process is almost undetectable. When you are wearing extensions, you become more aware of the process due to the difference in length from your natural lashes to the lashes with extensions adhered. Don't be scared if you see eyelash extensions fell off with your natural lash attached to it. That's absolutely normal.

Regularly there are 90-120 extensions applied to one eye during eyelash extensions procedure. That means that by the third week you will have a little less than half of the set left.

Not only extensions falling out because of lash cycle but because the glue is getting older and can't hold eyelash extensions any more. Oil and steam also can break the glue and make the extensions to fall off.

Touch ups are recommended every 2 to 3 weeks to keep the lash line looking full at all times.

What happens during eyelash fill?

Your natural eyelashes keep growing while having eyelash extensions applied. You may notice that by second or third week your eyelashes look a little longer and some of them even too long and become to twist. That happens when extensions was applied to the growing lash. This lash kept growing with extensions on and now you can notice this lash looks longer than others. During the touch up professional will remove all outgrown lashes and replace them with new extensions. All natural lashes left without extensions during lash cycle will be also filled with extensions. Touch ups may take 1 hour to 2 hour depending on the style and conditions of your lashes.
